Development and innovation

Industrial Textiles and Plastics Ltd was founded in 1989 and is based in Easingwold in North Yorkshire. Initially, ITP was the UK distributor for a new scaffold sheeting product made in Holland. The company then expanded into providing quality European roofing materials to the building trade in the UK.

In the 1990s, ITP developed a new barrier material for the Ministry of Defence to produce a new generation of COLPRO shelters resistant to chemical and biological warfare agents, which were subsequently used by British Forces during the Gulf War.

In 2002, ITP responded to customers’ requirements for specific materials by moving into manufacturing, to provide engineered textiles and membranes designed to meet market demands. The product range has now grown to hundreds of materials in different sizes, specifications and uses. Included in this are innovative geomembranes for environmental protection in the construction industry using the technology developed with the MoD.

Expansion into the international market for began in 2003, with materials being created specifically for Scandinavian weather and containment protection systems.

Subsequently, ITP introduced an innovative range of breathable membranes with exceptional UV resistance, suitable for use on exposed installations behind wooden, steel mesh, glass, polycarbonate and fabric mesh. Conventional breather membranes cannot provide long-term UV stability, so Powerlon® UV and Powerlon® UV Colour, with their superior durability and high resistance to UV exposure, offer exciting new creative and stylish design opportunities for architects.

In 2013, the company launched Puraflex®, the next generation barrier membrane for protection against hydrocarbons and toxic industrial pollutants commonly found in contaminated land. This innovative material significantly outperforms traditional HDPE membranes; it was followed in late 2015 by Powerbase® VOC, which offers similar outstanding levels of protection against harmful gases such as radon, methane and carbon dioxide, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Another innovation by ITP is the Powerbase® VOC app, a unique software application used by environmental engineers to provide site specific permeation information as part of contaminated land risk assessments.

In-house processing of materials include surface coating, finishing and either flexographic or digital printing. A newly acquired large-format digital machine is capable of full-colour printing up to 3.0 metres wide to virtually any length. This offers outstanding opportunities for corporate branding, promotion and advertising for customers.
